Artificial intelligence is evolving all by itself (sciencemag)

Artificial intelligence is evolving all by itself | Science | AAAS

“While most people were taking baby steps, they took a giant leap into the unknown,” says Risto Miikkulainen, a computer scientist at the University of Texas, Austin, who was not involved with the work. “This is one of those papers that could launch a lot of future research.” Building an AI algorithm takes time. Take neural networks, a common type of machine learning used for translating languages and driving cars. These networks loosely mimic the structure of the brain and learn from training data by altering the strength of connections between artificial neurons. Smaller subcircuits of neurons carry out specific tasks—for instance spotting road signs—and researchers can spend months working out how to connect them so they work together seamlessly.

Czernobyl on fire? Pripyat is….

Ukraine: wildfires draw dangerously close to Chernobyl site | Environment | The Guardian

The tour operator, Yaroslav Yemelianenko, wrote that the fire had reached the abandoned city of Pripyat and was just 2km (1.24 miles) away from the nuclear power plant and the Pidlisny radioactive waste disposal site. “The situation is critical. The zone is burning,” he wrote in a Facebook post accompanied by a video of the blaze. Yemelianenko, a member of a public advisory board to Ukraine’s emergency service, also accused the government of covering up the severity of the fires.

We should call it American Racism #Corona Virus – ARC

That’s so bad, these numbers. I sincerely hope this is a wake up call to this great country.

Translating from the German article: “In Chicago more than half of the infected and 72% of the dead are African Americans. ‘Breathtaking’ is what Major Lori Lightfoot calls this, and a ‘call to action’.”

Here’s a good read from Politico on the problem’s nature:

Time Management: The Eisenhower Matrix

This has helped me so many times:

The Eisenhower Matrix: Introduction & 3-Minute Video Tutorial

Where does the name come from? Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States from 1953 until 1961. Before becoming President, he served as a general in the United States Army and as the Allied Forces Supreme Commander during World War II. He also later became NATO’s first supreme commander. Dwight had to make tough decisions continuously about which of the many tasks he should focus on each day. This finally led him to invent the world-famous Eisenhower principle, which today helps us prioritize by urgency and importance.

Oh oh … Nucular plants need watering, even during Corona…

How to refuel a nuclear power plant during a pandemic | Ars Technica

Refueling usually takes around a month and involves hosting hundreds of electricians, welders, and other industrial workers who rove around the country refueling nuclear power plants. But not all of these contractors are needed just to top up a reactor. Many are involved with opportunistic repairs, upgrades, and inspections that can only occur while the reactor is offline. To cope with the pandemic, Arizona Public Service made the decision to only conduct repairs that are essential for keeping the reactor running until its next refueling outage in the fall of 2021.

Germany – the former lead-footed tortoise that perfoms very well in Corona Crisis

Germany’s devolved logic is helping it win the coronavirus race | World news | The Guardian

Some private labs started offering tests for the Covid-19 virus long before statutory health insurers were offering to pay for the tests, giving Germany a head start. Now around 250 laboratories are carrying out between 300,000 and 500,000 tests for Covid-19 every week. Not bad for a lead-footed tortoise.

Oceans can be restored – if we want that…

Oceans can be restored to former glory within 30 years, say scientists | Environment | The Guardian

The scientists say there is now the knowledge to create an ocean renaissance for wildlife by 2050 and with it bolster the services that the world’s people rely on, from food to coastal protection to climate stability. The measures needed, including protecting large swathes of ocean, sustainable fishing and pollution controls, would cost billions of dollars a year, the scientists say, but would bring benefits 10 times as high.

How about the “Ischgl”-Virus?

Trumps handling of Corona will have killed thousands.

The missing six weeks: how Trump failed the biggest test of his life | US news | The Guardian

In the absence of sufficient test kits, the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initially kept a tight rein on testing, creating a bottleneck. “I believe the CDC was caught flat-footed,” was how the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, put it on 7 March. “They’re slowing down the state.” The CDC’s botched rollout of testing was the first indication that the Trump administration was faltering as the health emergency gathered pace. Behind the scenes, deep flaws in the way federal agencies had come to operate under Trump were being exposed. In 2018 the pandemic unit in the national security council – which was tasked to prepare for health emergencies precisely like the current one – was disbanded. “Eliminating the office has contributed to the federal government’s sluggish domestic response,” Beth Cameron, senior director of the office at the time it was broken up, wrote in the Washington Post.

The Lost Month: How a Failure to Test Blinded the U.S. to COVID-19 | Boston.com

The result was a lost month, when the world’s richest country — armed with some of the most highly trained scientists and infectious disease specialists — squandered its best chance of containing the virus’ spread. Instead, Americans were left largely blind to the scale of a looming public health catastrophe. The absence of robust screening until it was “far too late” revealed failures across government, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, a former CDC director. Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins, said the Trump administration had “incredibly limited” views of the pathogen’s potential impact. Dr. Margaret Hamburg, a former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, said the lapse enabled “exponential growth of cases.” And Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, a top government scientist involved in the fight against the virus, told members of Congress that the early inability to test was “a failing” of the administration’s response to a deadly, global pandemic. “Why,” he asked later in a magazine interview, “were we not able to mobilize on a broader scale?”

Bob Dylan neuer Song: “Murder Most Foul”

Germany and its healthcare system… the probably best method against COV-19

Coronavirus: Why Germany death rate lower than Spain or Italy – Business Insider

“A sturdy healthcare system

Germany is in good shape to fight its outbreak because it has a well-developed and comprehensive healthcare system, with both public and private options.

Germany spends $4,714.26 per person each year on healthcare, according to World Bank data from 2016. The figure is higher than most other nations.

Germany has the second-most critical care beds per capita in Europe, according to data from European Health for All. The beds are essential when trying to battle severe cases of the coronavirus.

Germany has 621 beds per 100,000 people. Italy has 275, and Spain 293.”
